Concealed Carry with the M1911: Pros, Cons, and Best  Practices

The M1911 was originally designed as a military sidearm, however modern M1911 models are becoming a popular choice for concealed carry. Back in the day I carried the old warhorse as well as used it extensively while providing training across the country. I was a big fan, but the original models proved a wee bit impractical compared to the explosion of the polymer-framed/striker-fired firearms. Choosing the newer M1911 for everyday carry (EDC) comes with unique challenges and considerations. Here are some pros and cons, along with suggested best practices.

One of the pros to carrying the M1911 in .45ACP was the stopping power. However, as bullet design evolved, we discovered other calibers were able to achieve peak performance similar to the legendary cartridge. A huge pro for the M1911 community is the chambering in 9mm. The switch provides many advantages, cheaper ammunition with more options and increased availability. With the switch came another huge pro: increased magazine capacity. Taking the original 7 round magazine and increasing to 15 rounds and more in some cases. Regardless of the caliber and capacity, the trigger remains largely unchanged. Many comment how the M1911 offers the best trigger, breaking just like a candy cane with a crisp snap. The single-action trigger delivers incredible control and precision. Despite the new changes the M1911 continues to be one of the most customizable firearms ever produced. Allowing the end user to tailor the firearm to personal preferences and carry needs.

One thing remains the same though, the M1911 tends to be heavy. Even with lightweight alloy frames, the overall weight can sometimes exceed 2 pounds. For everyday carry, that can get old and lead to poor carry habits such as frequent fidgeting and adjusting. As our industry evolves, we see the mini-red dot sights becoming increasingly popular for concealed carry. While many models offer slide cuts to accommodate the MRDS, they often are quite high as a result of requiring the use of mounting plates. The M1911 enjoys a long service life with proper maintenance and cleaning. Depending on the tolerances, the cleaning interval could be more frequent to ensure reliability. Maintenance is more about replacing the various springs to ensure optimal functioning. Translated to the end user putting in the work to ensure dependability for EDC.

For those looking to carry every day the best practices starts with quality holster selection. Whether IWB or OWB, pick a holster that carries the weight well and ensures a quick draw. Select holsters with excellent retention, security, protect the trigger and have a close to body fit. The carry position is personal preference, but it should be comfortable for long periods of wear. It’s important to start with quality instruction to learn how to safely and quickly perform the drawstroke. To include safely re-holstering. Due to the larger size and weight a sturdy belt will go a long way to carrying comfortable. Avoiding belt sag is best accomplished with a rigid enough belt to support the weight. As mentioned earlier, training and practice are important to learn the proper manual of arms. Specifically the use of the manual thumb safety and single action operation. Regular training provides a strong base along with confidence and continued interest in training to build muscle memory.

While the M1911 may not be the first choice for everyone when it comes to concealed carry, its proven design and updated designs makes it a viable option for those willing to overcome its challenges. With the right holster, carry setup, and consistent training, the M1911 can be a highly effective concealed carry firearm, providing both reliability and a sense of heritage.
